The Wiggle Dress begins!

So last night my friend Carli, who is in the fashion program at Iowa State, helped me out with creating my second Halloween costume! I'm creating a 1940's-WW2esque wiggle dress! I found a thing on how to turn a sweatshirt into a pencil skirt and since Orpheus Descending was set in the 40's a lot of the skirts for the costumes were super-high waisted and I fell in love with the look, so instead of a pencil skirt on my hips I move it up several inches. My inspiration:

We work for several hours and we got quite a bit done! I owe her sooooooo much!!! I don't have pictures of the process because we were working constantly but I promise I will get some when I work on it again! I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Until next time, happy stitching!!!

Numero Uno

My first post... what to say, what to say? Well I guess some basics are in order.

My name is Samantha and I am a senior in college (hopefully I will be graduating in May!!!). I've been sewing for about 12 of my 22 years of life and have recently fallen more and more in love with it! I am a Theater major in school but haven't quite figured out if that's the right path for me. I just got through with the play Orpheus Descending by Tennessee Williams. It was a fun endeavor and it's a bit bittersweet to be done, but I'm really thankful for the experience!

I have decided to constantly be sewing/creating something to help me from going insane, whether it be for myself or for a friend I will be sitting at my sewing machine stitching away! Oh, that reminds me, I'm currently working on a Singer but I'm not quite sure which one ha ha (the users manual says "5, 8, 10, 13, & 22 Pattern Sewing Machines" I'm assuming its one of those). If anyone has some knowledge on this I would greatly appreciate it! It's my mom's hand-me-down. It didn't like her so she gave it to me, although sometimes it doesn't like me either!

Currently I am working on my Halloween costume (one of four), which is practically done. I just need to hammer in the rest of the grommets, lace up the front for that corset look, cut little triangles out of the bottom of the dress, and viola, it will be done! It's a bit hard to do that in an apartment without angering the neighbors below us! Sorry guys! For my first time Princess seaming and realizing after I bought and cut the interfacing it wasn't fusible, I think I did a good job. Its supposed to be a robin hood costume. I found this cool pattern for a hat I think I'm going to make here.

Whats next for me? Well I'm working on this wiggle type dress for another Halloween costume. The idea is pretty cool and I've even got my roommate on board! She wants one too! My boyfriend was going to go as a sailor and I was trying to find something to match and while looking for stuff online I found this awesome wiggle dress and wanted to create one myself. We will see how that goes! I've pinned the silhouette now I just have to figure out the details! Wish me luck!

Happy Stitching!
